The Sun Mask

The Sun Mask
THE SUN MASK
The mask is approximately 18" diameter from point to point. It is made of heavy cardboard, painted golden yellow, and "gilded" with arrowpoints of gold and silver mylar film. This gives the mask a shimmering, reflective appearance. The triangle patches on the face are gold mylar foil. Additional trim is a "brow" of silver garland, in a semi-circle over the forehead; and 18-inch dangles of gold garland hanging from each side. A handle of doubled bamboo chopsticks is glued to the back of the center bottom ray, allowing the dancer to hold the mask in one hand, to twirl and move the mask about while performing. A razor knife was used to cut out the eye openings and mouth oval.
